Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
As a little
boy, I would often come in for dinner after playing with my Tonka
toys in the dirt. My
mother would always inspect my hands to make sure they were clean
before I ate dinner, and if they weren’t I would be promptly
directed to the bathroom to wash them.
Had my mother not done this, I would have sat down and ate
dinner with dirty hands, and who knows what kind of bacteria I could
have put into my body.
In a way, she was acting like John the Baptist - calling to mind my
need for cleansing so I could securely eat dinner.
John the Baptist was the forerunner to Jesus, and his voice
represents our conscience calling to mind our need to repent so as
to prepare a space in our hearts to receive our Lord.
Our personal sin is something that we can easily rationalize
- we can pretty much tell ourselves:
“oh, it’s no big deal!”
But it is a big deal - in fact we are dangerously fooling
ourselves if we really believe we can be in an authentic
relationship with God while persisting in sin and not repenting of
it. Advent is a
penitential season meaning that the Church is asking us to look
within ourselves and be honest about those attachments to sin we may
have so as to confess them in the sacrament of Reconciliation.
That sacrament is a
necessary gift as it unites us in a deeper and more profound way
to the God who loves infinitely beyond our understanding.
Holy Family has this sacrament available every Tuesday from
6-7 pm, every Saturday from 4-5:30 pm, and by appointment.
Also, we will have our Advent Penance service on Thursday,
December 22nd.
Your Brother in Christ,
Fr. Chris
