HOLY FAMILY CHURCH
November 27, 2011
1st Sunday of Advent

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

This weekend marks the beginning of the new liturgical year.  We call this season “Advent” which is shortened from the Latin Adventus which means “coming.”  This season has a two-fold character:  to prepare us for Christmas when Christ’s first coming is remembered, and as as season when that remembrance directs our mind and heart to await Christ’s second coming at the end of time.  The color of the priest’s vestments is purple which signifies that this season is penitential.  In order to prepare for Christ, we need to clear out the clutter of sin from our hearts so as to make room for Christ.  This is why we have the Advent Reconciliation Service which will be here at Holy Family on December 22nd.  The readings we hear during Advent are primarily from Isaiah and they are both a call for repentance and a reason to have hope.  Isn’t this what it really means to be a human being?  St. Augustine once said “our hearts are restless until they rest in you O Lord.”  The coming of Christ is what our hearts are truly longing for, and to enflame that hope, we want to allow Him to take away our sins.  As we enter into this new year, let’s make it our goal to step it up a notch in our spiritual life and commitment to Christ.  In doing so, our hope will be strengthened as we await his glorious return.

                                                                                   Your Brother in Christ,

                                                                                                                                Fr. Chris

REFLECTION ~ We must go beyond “watching” for the Lord. We must prepare for him. Resolve to spend some extra time in prayerful preparation for the coming of the Lord at Christmas.
