Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,
Have you ever
wondered why we call a Catholic priest “Father”?
Doesn’t it seem to directly against what Jesus says in the
Gospel today? When a
priest is called “Father”, it is to be understood as a shepherd -
one who is a spiritual father to the people of God.
A priest is one who stands in for the Person of Jesus in
terms of sacramental duties (in persona Christi), but also as
someone people can look to as a sign of Christ the Good Shepherd.
Through the unique calling God gives to him, the priest has a
responsibility to build up the people of God through his teaching,
preaching, and sanctifying (through the sacraments) and in this way,
acts not unlike a biological father in the sense that his concern
should be the well-being of each person entrusted to him.
However, while a biological father takes care of his children
through nourishing their mind and body, the priest, as a spiritual
father is concerned with nourishing their soul.
This is the way God planned for all of us, His spiritual
children, to grow in holiness:
through the servanthood and spiritual fatherhood of the
priest.
Your Brother in Christ,
Fr. Chris

He has collaborated with famed British maestro, Allen Wilson,
and the Slovak National Symphony to produce four CD's of his
original work. His
