HOLY FAMILY CHURCH
February 5, 2012
5th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Brothers & Sisters in Christ,

He left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed.”  This is a line from today’s Gospel that sums up Jesus’ entire ministry.  Anytime He went out to proclaim the good news, to heal the sick, to bring hope to those in captivity, etc. what always precedes His actions is prayer.  His intimate relationship with the Father tells us that prayer - his relationship with the Father - is the means by which the good news was to be implanted into people’s hearts.  Jesus carved out time in His incredibly busy schedule for prayer because He knew that His relationship with the Father was the key to the success of His ministry.  What is more important to understand here, though, is that Jesus’ entire identity was His prayerful relationship with the Father.  At our baptism, our identity became that of Jesus, so our prayerful relationship with the Father through Jesus and the Holy Spirit is who we are at our core.  Taking time to pray each day is not an option for the baptized person.  We all get busy with life, and Jesus certainly was busy in His life - look at how many people were competing for His attention:  His apostles, those in need of healing and consolation, even some Scribes and Pharisees - He had a full plate to say the least!  But He still put prayer at the center of His life.  Just like Jesus, all of us are busy with family, work, church, activities, etc., and taking time to pray helps us to remember that God is the source of every blessing in our life.  When we do take the time to pray, God always rewards us 100 fold and somehow, we are still able to get everything done and then some!  So let’s remember to take time to pray every day!

Your Brother in Christ,

 Fr Chris

REFLECTION ~ In today’s Gospel, Jesus wakes before dawn and goes off to a deserted place to pray. Set aside time this week to spend alone in prayer.
